Significant steps toward strengthening agricultural productivity and rural economic development were marked today in several areas of northern Lower Jubba Region, with the groundbreaking of two major irrigation canal projects and a new livestock market.
The projects include the Yontooy 1 Irrigation Canal, which will extend 3.6 kilometres and provide irrigation services to 290 farmers cultivating approximately 300 hectares of farmland.
The canal is expected to enhance agricultural output and improve water access for farming communities in the area.
The construction was launched on the Buulo-Guduud 1 Irrigation Canal, a 4.6-kilometre waterway that will benefit more than 300 farmers and support the irrigation of nearly 400 hectares of agricultural land. The project is anticipated to strengthen food production, increase farmers’ incomes, and improve resilience to recurrent climate-related challenges.
The day’s events also featured the groundbreaking of the Yontooy Livestock Market, which will serve as a central trading hub for various types of livestock.
The market is expected to create new economic opportunities for pastoralists, traders, and local communities while improving access to livestock marketing services.
All three initiatives are being funded through the Rural Livelihoods Resilience Programme (RLRP), a development programme dedicated to improving livelihoods, enhancing drought resilience, and supporting the recovery and sustainable development of vulnerable rural communities across Jubaland.
The projects underscore ongoing efforts to expand rural infrastructure, strengthen agricultural and livestock value chains, and promote long-term economic growth for communities across the region.
