The Jubbaland Ministry of Health and Social Care today commemorated World Mental Health Day in Kismayo with a special event aimed at raising public awareness, promoting mental health care, and strengthening support for people living with mental health conditions.

The event brought together senior government officials and health sector stakeholders, including the Minister of Health of Jubbaland, Ismail Ahmed Garas, the Minister of Transport, the Acting Director General of the Ministry of Health, departmental directors, ministry officials, heads of mental health facilities, and representatives from partner organizations working alongside the ministry.

This year’s commemoration was held under the theme, “Listening to the Experiences of People Affected by Mental Health Conditions: Real Stories and Lessons Learned.” The theme highlighted the importance of hearing the voices of individuals living with mental health challenges, understanding the obstacles they face, and encouraging communities to respond with compassion, understanding, and support.

During the event, participants engaged in meaningful discussions on the challenges limiting access to mental health services, emphasizing the need to expand and improve the quality of care available across Jubbaland. Speakers also stressed the importance of increasing public awareness and addressing the stigma and discrimination often experienced by people with mental health conditions.

Officials further underscored the need for coordinated efforts and sustainable strategies to ensure that individuals requiring mental health care can access quality, affordable, and dignified services that uphold their rights and well-being.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working with partners and stakeholders to strengthen mental health services and promote a more inclusive society where those affected by mental illness receive the care, respect, and support they deserve.
