The Ministry of Interior of the Jubbaland State has concluded a four-day capacity-building workshop in Kismayo aimed at strengthening and operationalizing the district’s Peace Committees to enhance their role in conflict prevention and community stability.
The workshop focused on improving the effectiveness of Kismayo’s Peace Committees and equipping them to play a more active role in preventing and resolving disputes arising from climate change impacts and competition over natural resources, including rainfall, grazing land, water sources, and land use.
Over the course of four days, participants received training and practical skills in conflict prevention and resolution, natural resource management, community dialogue, mediation, and the vital role Peace Committees play in promoting peace, stability, and social cohesion within communities.
The program also enhanced participants’ understanding of how Peace Committees can work closely with local communities and district authorities to identify and address emerging tensions before they escalate into conflicts that could threaten peace and coexistence.
Speaking at the closing session, officials underscored the importance of proactive community engagement and collaboration in addressing the root causes of disputes, particularly those linked to environmental and resource-related challenges.
The workshop concluded with a strong call for Kismayo’s Peace Committees to take an active leadership role in strengthening peacebuilding efforts, preventing conflicts, and fostering community cooperation.
Participants were encouraged to promote dialogue, consultation, and mutual understanding as key tools for achieving sustainable and long-term solutions that support harmony and development across the district.
