The Mayor of Kismayo, Omar Abdullahi Mohamed, accompanied by the Deputy District Mayor and Secretary of the Local Government, Dahir Hussein Abdi, and the Deputy Chairman for Social Affairs, Najiib Barre Salad, has led a public awareness campaign aimed at preparing residents for the upcoming rainy season and mitigating the risks of flooding.
The awareness initiative focused on the importance of opening and clearing drainage channels to ensure the smooth flow of rainwater and prevent waterlogging and other flood-related challenges that may arise during the anticipated rains.
Addressing community members, the officials emphasized the need for collective responsibility in maintaining the city’s drainage infrastructure.
Residents were urged not to dump waste or other materials into waterways and drainage systems, as blocked channels significantly increase the risk of flooding and environmental hazards.
The leaders also called on the public to actively contribute to keeping Kismayo clean and hygienic, stressing that improved sanitation and proper waste management are essential in safeguarding both public health and the urban environment during the rainy season.
The Kismayo District Local Government is currently intensifying efforts to strengthen rain preparedness measures and has appealed to residents to work closely with district authorities to prevent flooding and minimize its potential impact on communities across the city.
