The Jubaland State Police Command in Lower Juba Region has successfully concluded a 30-day intensive training program on gender-based violence (GBV) for a specialized unit of the Jubaland Police Force.
The training, held in Kismayo, focused on enhancing officers’ capacity to address, prevent, and respond effectively to cases of violence based on gender, while also strengthening their understanding of victim protection and legal procedures.
Fully funded through self-support initiatives by the Lower Juba Regional Police Command, the program was delivered collaboratively by experienced instructors from the Jubaland Police and experts from the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The Acting Commander of the Lower Juba Regional Police, Captain Omar Hujale Abdi, who commended the participants for their dedication throughout the month-long course. He emphasized the critical role of trained police officers in combating gender-based violence and ensuring justice for victims.
The event was also attended by the Head of Planning and Training, Major Shukri Farah Duale, along with representatives from partner organizations working closely with Jubaland Police on issues related to gender-based violence (SGBV) and child protection.
Officials highlighted that the training marks a significant step toward strengthening institutional capacity within the police force, enabling officers to better handle sensitive cases while upholding human rights and community trust.
Participants expressed confidence that the knowledge and skills gained during the training will improve their day-to-day operations and enhance their ability to protect vulnerable groups, particularly women and children.
The initiative underscores ongoing efforts by Jubaland authorities and their partners to build a more responsive, professional, and community-oriented police service capable of addressing critical social challenges.
