Jubaland’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Idid Suleiman Hashi, has handed over 200 trees to the management of Sayid Mohamed Abdulle International Airport in Kismayo, as part of a major environmental initiative aimed at enhancing green spaces and combating climate change.
The minister personally took part in planting the trees within the airport compound and its surrounding areas, signaling the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The tree-planting campaign was carried out in collaboration with the Kismayo Airport administration, led by the airport manager, as well as peacekeeping forces operating in Kismayo under the Somalia mission.
The initiative was organized to coincide with the global commemoration of World Environment Day, which was widely observed across Jubaland this year.
Speaking during the event, Minister Hashi underscored the importance of environmental protection and the long-term benefits of reforestation efforts. He urged the airport authorities to take proper care of the newly planted trees to ensure they grow and contribute to improving the local ecosystem.
“These trees are not only a symbol of today’s celebration, but also an investment in the future beauty and sustainability of our environment,” the minister said.
He emphasized that nurturing and protecting the trees would not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the airport but also provide environmental benefits for future generations.
The initiative highlights Jubaland’s growing focus on climate action and environmental resilience, encouraging institutions and communities alike to play an active role in preserving natural resources and promoting a greener, healthier environment.
