The United Nations humanitarian agency said on Friday that it is seeking $ 993.3 million to provide life-saving assistance to prevent drought in Somalia.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says the effects of the drought and economic pressures in the country are increasing the risk of starvation.

“7.7 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, of which 7 million are said to be affected by the drought,” a statement from OCHA said.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says it is working on a comprehensive response to drought and famine.

Four consecutive seasons of poor rainfall have led to the country’s worst drought in 40 years.
