The military commanders of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have agreed to step up joint operations with the Somali National Army.
The move follows a two-day meeting in Mogadishu on strengthening election security and preparations for the AMISOM mission in 2021.
During the meeting, the commanders assessed the progress made so far, the AMISOM Concept, the Transition Plan and the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2568 (2021).
AMISOM Deputy Force Commander for Operations & Planning Gen. William Kitsao Shume told officials that significant progress was being made in planned operations that needed to reduce Al-Shabaab’s power.
The United Nations Security Council, which authorized AMISOM, has issued Resolution 2568 on the implementation of 2021 joint Somali and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) operations.
The Federal Government and the African Union are currently meeting in Mogadishu to understand the future of the African Union forces which has been in Somalia since 2007 and their period would lapse on December 2021, but an extension of their mission mandate is expected to be agreed upon.
