The meeting of the heads of the federal government, regional governments and the Benadir region in Dhusamareb ended in failure. The leaders are said to be leaving today without reaching an agreement.

The much talked matter was the issue of Gedo region, which has not yet been resolved, with the federal government accusing Jubbaland state president Ahmed Mohamed Islam of rejecting any solution to the Gedo region issue.

Somalia’s Information Minister Osman Abukar Dubbe told the media last night that the conference would be adjourned today with no agreement reached on the contentious issues.

Osman Dubbe also said another controversial issue was who would nominate members of the electoral commission to represent the northern regions of Somaliland.

Minister Dubbe said that President Mohamed Farmajo will address both houses of the Somali parliament today and another meeting will be convened at which the federal government will announce the venue and time in due time.

Speaking at a press conference in Dhusamareb, Dubbe said the government had compromised on all three points of contention which were the Gedo region, the northern region’s parliamentarians and the electoral commissions.

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has head back to Mogadishu this morning. His term is due to end on 8th this month.
