The Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation of the Jubaland State Government, Ugaas Ali Aden, has conducted a field inspection of several communities located along the banks of the Juba River in Kismayo District, including Qaamqaam, Yoontooy, and Buula-Gaduud, to assess the river’s condition amid growing concerns over potential flooding.
The visit focused on evaluating areas considered vulnerable to river overflow, particularly as heavy rains and possible El Niño-related weather conditions raise fears of flooding that could affect farming communities living near the riverbanks.
During the tour, the Deputy Minister met with local farmers and community members, urging them to remain vigilant and strengthen early preparedness measures. He emphasized the importance of community cooperation, self-reliance, and proactive action to mitigate the impact of potential floods and reduce risks associated with the anticipated seasonal rains.
Mr. Ugaas highlighted that the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is intensifying efforts to enhance disaster preparedness and climate resilience across vulnerable areas.
As part of these efforts, the ministry is constructing and reinforcing embankments at weak points along the Juba River to help prevent flooding and protect agricultural land and livelihoods.
Rehabilitation works are also underway on irrigation canals in flood-prone locations to improve water management systems and reduce the likelihood of overflow that could damage farmlands and surrounding communities.
The Deputy Minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to supporting farmers and safeguarding agricultural production, stressing that effective flood prevention requires a collective effort between government institutions and local communities.
“The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to stand alongside our farmers,” he said, calling on residents to demonstrate ownership, unity, and community-driven action in protecting their farms and livelihoods from the threat of flooding.
The inspection forms part of Jubaland’s broader strategy to strengthen early warning, preparedness, and response mechanisms aimed at minimizing the impact of extreme weather events and ensuring the resilience of rural communities along the Juba River.
