Abas Daahir Calasow, a 20-year-old member of the Al-Shabaab Khawaarij militant group, surrendered to Jubbaland security forces. He turned himself in to the Special Police Unit stationed in Bar-Sanguuni.
According to security officials, Abas revealed that he joined the enemy group in 2022 while he was in the Ruunirgood area of Middle Shabelle region.
His surrender comes in the wake of heavy losses recently inflicted on the Al-Shabaab Khawaarij militants during fierce clashes in the Kudhaa area. The sustained pressure and military setbacks have reportedly caused widespread frustration and desertion among the group’s fighters.
Abas has since been transferred to the CID headquarters of the Kismayo district police for further interrogation and processing.
Earlier today, another militant surrendered to the Birjeex Darawish Unit while handing over a PKM machine gun, marking yet another sign of growing defections within the group.
