The Ministry of Agriculture of the Jubbaland State Government today officially commemorated World Food Day and Somali Farmers’ Day with a vibrant ceremony held at the Jubbaland State Guest House in Kismayo.
The annual event, observed globally on October 16, brought together senior officials from both legislative and executive branches of the Jubbaland Government, representatives from civil society organizations, and farmers from the Lower Jubba region.
The ceremony was formally opened by the Speaker of the Jubbaland Parliament, Abdi Mohamed Abdirahman who emphasized the critical role Somali farmers play in ensuring food security and driving local economic development. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting farmers, especially in the face of climate change challenges that continue to impact agricultural productivity.
Other speakers highlighted the importance of collaboration between government institutions, farmers, and development partners to enhance food availability, improve agricultural infrastructure, and promote sustainable farming practices across Jubbaland.
The event aimed to raise awareness about food security, celebrate the resilience and contributions of Somali farmers, and underscore the need for increased investment in agriculture to achieve self-sufficiency in food production.
This year’s World Food Day, organized by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), is celebrated under the theme: “Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind.”
Meanwhile, Somali Farmers’ Day serves as a national tribute to the indispensable role of farmers in the country’s development and food systems.
