The Somali National Salvation Council has issued a strong condemnation of the Federal Government’s actions under President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, accusing the administration of undermining Somalia’s fragile federal system and inciting instability in Jubbaland State.
In a press statement the members, who are also Federal MPs, expressed deep concern over what they described as “reckless and unconstitutional maneuvers” by the presidency, targeting regional states that hold differing political views, particularly Jubbaland State.
“It is deeply regrettable,” the statement read, “that while large parts of the country remain under the grip of terrorist groups shedding Somali blood, the government is misusing national forces for political agendas, dividing communities and fueling internal conflict.”
The Council highlighted recent military mobilizations orchestrated by the presidency, including a failed operation in Raaskambooni earlier this year that resulted in casualties and instability. They warned of a similar escalation now unfolding in the Gedo region, specifically in Beled-Hawo, where federal troops are reportedly being used to provoke conflict.
The council also condemned the government’s alleged attempt to establish a parallel administration in Garbaharey, bypassing the constitutionally recognized Jubaland government. They warned that such actions could trigger renewed violence, loss of life, and a breakdown of peace and security.
“Every attempt to dismantle legitimate governance structures will only lead to further chaos,” the Council stated. “We urge the government to respect the provisional constitution and the principles of federalism.”
The statement concluded with a call to reason, urging Somali intellectuals, civil society, international partners and political stakeholders to closely monitor the situation and hold the government accountable for actions that threaten national unity and constitutional order.
“The responsibility for any deterioration in peace and stability will rest squarely on the shoulders of the current administration,” the Council warned.
