
In a historic move aimed at safeguarding women’s rights and protecting future generations, the Speaker of the Jubbaland House of Representatives and Acting President, Sheikh Abdi Mohamed Abdirahman, officially inaugurated the launch ceremony of the Law Prohibiting Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at the Guest House in Kismayo.
The event drew a wide array of attendees, including senior government officials, members of parliament, leaders from the Ministries of Social Affairs and Health, civil society organizations, religious scholars, women’s groups, youth representatives, and other distinguished guests. Their presence underscored a unified commitment to raising awareness and supporting the implementation of this critical legislation.
In his keynote address, Sheikh Abdi Mohamed Abdirahman emphasized that the enactment of this law marks a significant step forward in the protection of women’s rights and the well-being of Somali children. He hailed it as a progressive milestone in Jubbaland’s journey toward social justice and human dignity.
The Speaker also commended the tireless efforts of women’s organizations and civil society groups who have long advocated for the eradication of FGM and played a pivotal role in shaping the legislation.
He reaffirmed the Jubbaland government’s full support for the enforcement of the law and called on all institutions and communities to actively participate in its implementation.
