HUNDREDS DISPLACED AFTER THE SHABELLE RIVER BURST ITS BANKS FLOODING PARTS OF JOWHAR TOWN

The Shabelle river burst its banks flooding a number of villages in the central town of Jowhar, the Hir-Shabelle regional state of Somalia.

The Bayahaw village was the worst hit village, the raging floodwaters also destroyed huge acres of farm plantations as well as displacing hundreds of people.

Chairman of the Bayahaw village said the flooding was a result of the heavy rain pounding many parts of Jawhar thus making the Shabelle river burst its banks.

The Chairman said the heavy flood menace is now threatening the lives of the villagers and has already wreaked havoc to large crops and called upon the Federal government of Somalia and the Hir-Shabelle regional state administration to intervene with an immediate response.

He said the affected people are now spending the night in the cold after they fled their submerged homes adding that emergency response and humanitarian aid should be brought to the affected families.

Parts of the Central Shabelle was recently affected by heavy flooding after the Shabelle River flooded the area owing to heavy rains that are currently being witnessed in many parts of the Hir-Shabelle regional state of Somalia.
