The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has issued a strong call for immediate de-escalation in Somalia following reports of violence in Mogadishu, warning that rising political tensions threaten the country’s fragile stability and future.
In a press statement, IGAD expressed “deep concern” over the deteriorating security situation, urging all parties involved to show restraint and avoid further escalation. The regional bloc condemned all acts of violence and emphasized the urgent need for peaceful, inclusive, and constructive dialogue to resolve political disputes.
“At this critical moment, preserving peace, stability, national unity, and the gains made in Somalia’s state-building efforts is of paramount importance,” said IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu.
The organization called on Somali leaders and stakeholders to put the interests of citizens first, stressing that consensus-driven solutions remain the only viable path forward. IGAD warned that continued tensions could undermine years of progress in rebuilding state institutions and fostering national cohesion.
Somalia, a founding member of IGAD, remains central to the Horn of Africa’s peace and security architecture.
The bloc reaffirmed its full solidarity with the Somali people and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote dialogue, reconciliation, and long-term stability.
The statement comes amid heightened political uncertainty in Somalia, with observers increasingly concerned that unresolved disputes could trigger broader instability if not addressed urgently.
