The Jubbaland State Military Court on Sunday officially opened proceedings in a high‑profile terrorism case against Abdirizak Abaas Sheekh Yuusuf, who is facing multiple serious charges related to extremist activities.
According to prosecutors, the accused is charged with membership in the militant group Al‑Shabaab, participation in terrorist acts, and the transmission of classified information harmful to public security. The prosecution stated that Abdirizak allegedly joined the group in 2014 and has since been involved in activities aimed at undermining security.
Security agencies further revealed that the suspect was arrested in 2025 while allegedly planning an attack on the university where he had been studying. Investigators say the planned attack was intended to target a public event taking place at the Daawad main hall in Kismayo, an incident that could have resulted in significant civilian casualties.
The court session was attended by the presiding judge and his two deputies, the Attorney General, the defense lawyer, and members of the accused’s family.
Formally opening the hearing, the Chairperson of the Jubbaland Military Court allowed the Attorney General, Ismail Ali Abdi, to present the charges in detail, outlining the evidence gathered by security authorities.
Representing the defense, Abdullahi Mohamed Kolombos addressed the court with arguments in support of the accused, responding to the prosecution’s claims.
The Court Chairperson, Colonel Abdullahi Mahmoud Ibrahim, adjourned the hearing, announcing that the trial will continue in the coming days as the court proceeds to examine the case further.
