Somali National Army (SNA) killed at least 160 al-Shabab militants in the recent weeks’ security operation in Galmudug, Hirshabelle and South West Regional States.
The Minister of Information, Daud Aweis Jama, said during a press conference in Mogadishu that around a hundred militants were killed in the border area between Galgaduud and Middle Shabelle regions, while an additional 60 were neutralized in Goofgaduud Bureey, a district situated 30km west of Baidoa.
Minister Jama emphasized that the security forces also seized military equipment during the operations. These achievements further propel the plan for Somali forces to take over security responsibility from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) by the end of 2024.
This week, Military commanders of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) have wrapped up a four-day meeting to evaluate the first phase of troop withdrawal from Somalia, which they said was successfully implemented in June.
As the Somali government forces, supported by international partners, intensify their efforts against al-Shabaab, it is anticipated that the second phase of anti-al-Shabaab operations will commence in the coming weeks. The ongoing operations demonstrate the commitment to tackle the threat posed by the militant group in various regions of Somalia.
