Ethiopian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Demeke Mekonnen has held talks with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan.

The two sides discussed Somalia’s elections, the reform of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the need to prevent Al-Shabaab terror attacks.

The Deputy Prime Minister told the SRSG that Ethiopia was closely monitoring the electoral process in Somalia, saying that Ethiopia was pleased with the process.

Demeke said co-operation is essential to thwart Alshabab militants’ attempts to take advantage of Somalia’s electoral process and the drought in the region.

The two sides also discussed the process of reforming the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and the role of troop contributing countries.
