The United Nations has expressed grave concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Ethiopia’s Tigray region following a year-long escalation of violence.

The United Nations says millions of Ethiopians are at risk of malnutrition, while many more are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

The warning came just hours after one of the UN planes failed to land in Mekelle and was forced to return immediately to Addis Ababa due to airstrikes by government forces.

Following the incident, the United Nations suspended all flights to the war-torn Tigrean region.

Gemma Connell of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) paints a bleak picture of the situation in Tigray.

“As of today, there are nearly seven million people in northern Ethiopia in dire need of humanitarian assistance. It includes more than five million people in Tigray, and the other two million are divided in Amhara and Afar, ”said Gemma Connell.
