The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Climate Change of the Jubaland State Government, which is responsible for climate early warning systems and monitoring drought and rainfall conditions, today convened a joint meeting to assess emerging weather risks and preparedness measures.
The meeting concluded with the issuance of a climate advisory warning of the potential impacts of the El Niño weather phenomenon, which could affect Somalia, including Jubaland, during the upcoming Deyr rainy season (October to December 2026).
A communiqué released following the meeting was read to the media by the Minister of Environment and Climate Change of the Jubaland State Government, Aydid Suleiman Hashi.
The statement noted that meteorological forecasts indicate a strengthening weather pattern that could bring above-average rainfall across Somalia, particularly in areas of Jubaland, during the Deyr season.
The ministry emphasized the need for heightened preparedness and close monitoring of weather developments, warning that excessive rainfall could increase the risk of flooding and other climate-related hazards in vulnerable communities.
Authorities called on relevant government institutions, humanitarian agencies, and local communities to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to mitigate the potential impacts of the forecasted conditions.
The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening early warning systems and ensuring the timely dissemination of weather information to the public.
The advisory comes as climate experts continue to monitor regional weather patterns, with forecasts suggesting that parts of Somalia may experience significantly higher-than-normal rainfall during the final months of 2026.
