Members of Somalia’s Upper House of Parliament have strongly condemned the recent armed clashes between Federal Government forces and Puntland security forces in Galkayo, warning that the conflict threatens national stability and undermines efforts aimed at strengthening peace and unity across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, lawmakers expressed deep concern over the violence in Galkayo, describing the confrontation as a tragic and unnecessary escalation that has resulted in loss of life, injuries, and damage to property.
The legislators emphasized that Galkayo has long been recognized as a symbol of coexistence, reconciliation, and regional stability, making the outbreak of hostilities particularly alarming.
The parliamentarians noted that the ongoing tensions risk reversing years of progress achieved through dialogue and cooperation, while also creating uncertainty for residents and affecting wider national interests.
They stressed that political disagreements should be resolved through peaceful means rather than military confrontation.
The lawmakers further criticized reports indicating that the Federal Government had deployed military forces to areas such as Teedan and Miirtaqwo in the Middle Shabelle region.
According to the statement, such actions could deepen divisions, damage property, displace civilians, and negatively impact Somalia’s security and development efforts.
Calling for restraint from all parties, the members of parliament urged the Federal Government to immediately halt military operations and prioritize dialogue to address the dispute. They also appealed to regional and national leaders to work together to preserve peace, protect civilians, and safeguard the unity of the Somali people.
The statement concluded with a direct appeal to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his administration to urgently de-escalate the situation and seek a peaceful resolution through negotiations, reaffirming that dialogue remains the most effective path toward lasting stability and national cohesion.
“The safety of civilians, preservation of peace, and protection of national unity must remain the highest priorities,” the lawmakers stated.
