The Director General of the Jubaland Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Mursal Hirsi, witnessed the successful first trial run of the Luglaw Irrigation Canal, marking a major milestone in efforts to strengthen irrigation services and agricultural productivity across the region.
During the visit, the Director General inspected the first phase of the canal’s construction, which is designed to improve access to reliable irrigation for farming communities and expand cultivable land in the area.
Once fully operational, the canal will directly benefit farmers in the communities of Goobweyn, El Jaale, Istanbul, and Qaamqaam. The project includes the establishment of 49 irrigation outlets and is expected to provide water to more than 200 to 300 hectares of farmland, much of which has remained uncultivated for years due to a lack of water.
Representatives from CERID/NIRAS, key implementing partners in the project, were also present during the trial, highlighting the collaborative efforts behind the initiative.
The inaugural test of the Luglaw Irrigation Canal was completed successfully, and the facility is expected to be formally handed over to farmers in the near future. The handover will enable local communities to access improved irrigation services, boost agricultural production, and make productive use of previously idle farmland.
The Luglaw Irrigation Canal project forms part of the Jubaland Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation’s broader strategy to strengthen irrigation infrastructure and expand agricultural production areas across the state.
Through close collaboration with development partners, including GIZ, the initiative is expected to play a significant role in enhancing food security, increasing crop yields, and improving the livelihoods of farming communities throughout Jubaland.
