A high-level security meeting focusing on the stability of the twin border towns of Elwak in Somalia and Elwak in Kenya was held in Elwak town, located in Mandera County in Kenya’s North Eastern region.
The meeting brought together key officials from both sides of the border, including administrators from the two towns, Kenyan security agencies, and senior officers from the Jubaland State’s Darawiish forces. The discussions aimed at addressing growing security concerns affecting communities living along the shared border.
Participants deliberated on the recent security challenges that have emerged in the area, acknowledging the need for a coordinated and unified response. They collectively agreed to strengthen joint efforts to combat any threats that could undermine peace, stability, and the long-standing coexistence of communities residing on both sides of the border.
The officials emphasized the importance of enhanced collaboration between security agencies, including timely intelligence sharing and strengthened operational coordination. They noted that such measures are crucial in preventing incidents of insecurity and ensuring the protection of civilians in the region.
The meeting comes at a critical time, following a series of recent security incidents in the vicinity of Elwak district in Somalia’s Gedo region, particularly near the Somalia–Kenya border. These incidents reportedly resulted in the deaths of nearly five people and left several others injured, raising concerns over the fragile security situation in the area.
Authorities expressed optimism that continued dialogue and joint security initiatives would play a vital role in restoring calm and reinforcing peaceful coexistence among the border communities.
