The Government of Jubbaland has strongly condemned what it described as an unlawful action by Somalia’s Federal Government, accusing it of obstructing a civilian aircraft en route between Kismayo and Dhobley.
In a press statement, Jubbaland officials said the aircraft, operated by Maandeeq Air and bearing registration 5Y-IFY, was carrying civilian passengers when it was allegedly forced to divert its route. According to the statement, the plane was instructed either to reroute to Mogadishu or land at Wajir Airport in neighboring Kenya.
Jubbaland authorities characterized the move as a clear violation of international civil aviation laws and agreements, which strictly prohibit the use of civilian flights for political purposes or unlawful interference.
“This act contravenes established international regulations governing civil aviation, which require that civilian air transport operations remain free from political manipulation,” the statement emphasized.
The regional government warned that such interference poses serious risks to passenger safety, undermines freedom of movement for Somali citizens, and erodes confidence in the country’s aviation system.
Officials expressed concern that the incident reflects a broader pattern in which Somali airspace is being used as a political tool rather than being managed as a neutral national service accessible to all citizens.
“It is deeply regrettable that the Federal Government, whose term has expired, is once again politicizing Somalia’s airspace instead of ensuring equal and fair access for all,” the statement added.
Jubbaland has called on international aviation bodies—particularly the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)—as well as the wider international community, to closely monitor what it described as “repeated violations” affecting civilian flights and the public’s right to travel freely.
The administration concluded by reiterating its firm stance that Somali citizens must not be subjected to political decisions that could endanger their safety or compromise their fundamental rights.
This latest dispute highlights ongoing tensions over control and management of Somalia’s airspace, raising fresh concerns about governance, regulatory compliance, and the safety of domestic air travel.
