Jubbaland Parliament Speaker Meets UNICEF Delegation to Address Worsening Drought Crisis

The Speaker of the Jubbaland Parliament, Sheikh Abdi Mohamed, today received at the Jubaland State House a high‑level delegation from UNICEF, led by the agency’s Representative to Somalia, Sandra Lattouf.

The discussions focused on the severe drought gripping Jubbaland regional state, which has significantly affected the lives and livelihoods of local communities, especially children and vulnerable women. Both sides emphasized the urgent need for rapid humanitarian assistance and a coordinated national and international response to mitigate the escalating crisis.

The meeting also covered efforts to strengthen and expand cooperation between the Jubaland Government and UNICEF across key sectors, including health, nutrition, water and sanitation, education, and child protection.

Senior officials from various ministries partnering with UNICEF attended the session, underscoring the importance of effective coordination and the implementation of priority development and relief programs.

Later on, The Jubbaland Minister of Planning, Investment and International Cooperation, together with the UNICEF Representative, held a joint press briefing. They highlighted the dire drought situation, the urgent humanitarian needs on the ground, and the critical importance of reinforcing development cooperation to reduce the impact of recurring natural disasters.
