
In a major step toward enhancing marine tourism in Jubbaland regionalstate, Somali boat-building company Sommarine has officially unveiled a newly constructed tourist boat crafted entirely in Kismayo. The launch marks a significant milestone in the region’s efforts to harness its coastal potential and promote sustainable economic growth through the blue economy.
The unveiling ceremony, held in Kismayo, Jubbaland state of Somalia drew a distinguished audience including Jubbaland government ministers, members of parliament, Kismayo district officials, Sommarine executives and staff, local entrepreneurs, and other invited guests.
Speaking at the event, Qeys Abdirahman, founder of Sommarine, shared insights into the company’s journey, highlighting the various phases of development, achievements to date, and ambitious plans for the future. He emphasized the critical role of advancing marine technology and fostering domestic tourism as key pillars of economic development.
Several attending ministers praised Sommarine’s accomplishments, describing the company as a model of innovation and resilience in Somalia’s private sector. They underscored the importance of investing in marine industries to create jobs and stimulate national economic growth.
The event’s highlight came when Ahmed Hassan Omar, Jubbaland’s Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy, officially inaugurated the new tourist boat. He commended the founder’s dedication to maritime enterprise and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting private sector initiatives. The minister also pledged to strengthen collaboration between the government and businesses to further develop the region’s marine economy.
This launch is part of a broader initiative to position Jubbaland as a premier destination for marine tourism and to empower local industries through innovation and investment.
