EAC leaders discuss Somali government’s request to join the regional bloc

Mohamed held sideline meetings with other African leaders as he campaigned for the approval of the request of the Somali government. He shared the economic and social opportunities in Somalia with the leaders.

The East African Community leaders noted that the verification exercise for the admission of the Federal Republic of Somalia into the East African Community had not been undertaken and directed the council to expeditiously fast-track the verification exercise in accordance with the EAC procedure for admission of the new members into the EAC and report to the 23rd meeting of the summit.

“President Mohamud thanked the leaders of the East African Community (EAC) for the opportunity they gave him to strengthen the request of the Somali government to join the regional bloc. He praised the people and the government of the Republic of Tanzania for the hospitality they gave him and his delegation,” the Somali presidency said in a press release.

President Hassan held meetings with various leaders, including the presidents of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, Tanzania, Ms. Samia Suluhu Hassan, Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, and Burundi Evariste Ndayishimiye.

Mohamud, who attended the prelude to the summit of the East African Community (EAC) head of states in Arusha in Tanzania on Thursday as a special guest, has again submitted an official request for membership.

The Somali government urged the EAC leaders to speed up its country’s membership application.
