A statement from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) said that AMISOM, in response to a statement from the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 4th of this month, has launched an investigation into the Kenyan military shelling in Gedo region.

“The mission is currently gathering information on the reported incident, and will work closely with the Federal Government of Somalia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and all other stakeholders while we investigate this matter,” the AMISOM statement said.

The statement also stated that AMISOM has a duty to carry out its mandate in Somalia, in accordance with the code of conduct, in accordance with all applicable international law. “They are therefore committed to investigating all allegations of human rights abuses against civilians.”

“AMISOM is fully investigating the incident and its findings will be shared with all stakeholders,” AMISOM said in a statement.

A day earlier on June 4, a press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia strongly condemned the Kenyan airstrikes in Gedo region.
