The Jubaland Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, in partnership with the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA), has handed over a number of water pumps to the Kismayo Municipal Administration to help drain rainwater accumulating in residential neighborhoods across the city.
The equipment is expected to play a crucial role in mitigating the impact of heavy rains and potential flooding, as concerns grow over weather conditions linked to the anticipated El Niño phenomenon.
The pumps were officially received by the Deputy Mayor of Kismayo Municipality for Social Affairs, Najiib Barre Salad, who emphasized the need to expand efforts aimed at managing stormwater and reducing risks associated with flooding and stagnant water in urban communities.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Deputy Mayor noted that strengthening drainage interventions is essential to protecting residents and minimizing the adverse effects of seasonal rains.
The Ministry stated that the delivery of the pumps forms part of broader preparedness measures designed to enhance the city’s resilience against heavy rainfall, flooding, and other emergency situations that may arise during the rainy season.
The initiative reflects the continued commitment of Jubaland authorities and their partners to safeguarding communities through proactive disaster risk reduction and emergency preparedness efforts.
