The Ministry of Health of the Jubaland State today launched a seven-day training programme on the Integrated Management of Newborn and Childhood Illnesses (IMNCI) for healthcare workers serving in health facilities across Kismayo District.
The opening ceremony was officially inaugurated by the Director of the Family Health Department at the Jubaland Ministry of Health, Dr. Mohamed Bashir Nur, who underscored the importance of strengthening the skills and knowledge of frontline healthcare workers to improve the quality of maternal and child health services.
The event was attended by several senior health officials, including Dr. Hani Sheikh Osman, Head of the Newborn Health Unit at Somalia’s Federal Ministry of Health; Salama Jamal Abdinasir, Head of the Child Health Unit at the Jubaland Ministry of Health; Abdirizak Said Jamus, Health Coordinator for Lower Juba Region; and other officials from the Ministry of Health.
The week-long training brings together healthcare professionals from various health facilities in Kismayo. It aims to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in applying internationally recognized IMNCI guidelines, while strengthening their capacity to assess, manage, and treat illnesses affecting newborns and children through an integrated and evidence-based approach.
Officials noted that the programme is designed to improve the delivery of essential child health services and ensure that healthcare workers are equipped with modern tools and best practices for diagnosing and managing common childhood illnesses.
The training forms part of the Jubaland Ministry of Health and Social Care’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of healthcare services for newborns and children.
The initiative also supports broader goals of reducing preventable illnesses and child mortality, while contributing to the development of healthier communities and a brighter future for the people of Jubaland.
