A delegation led by the Director General of the Jubaland Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Said Abdullahi Macalim, has formally taken over the newly rehabilitated Luuq Airport following the completion of extensive runway improvement works aimed at enhancing air transport services in the region.
The delegation included the Director General of the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Abdi Shukri Arab, the Deputy Director General of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA), the Director of Jubaland’s Aviation Department, the Director of the Land Transport Department, as well as representatives from various United Nations agencies.
Upon arrival in Luuq District, the delegation received a warm welcome from local authorities, members of parliament, security officials, the manager of Luuq Airport, and representatives from different sectors of the community.
The visit was primarily intended to facilitate the official handover and inspection of Luuq Airport, which has undergone a comprehensive rehabilitation project, particularly focusing on the airport’s runway. The improvements are expected to significantly strengthen aviation services and improve access to the district and surrounding areas.
The rehabilitation project was implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP) with funding provided by the European Union (EU).
The upgraded infrastructure is expected to enhance air connectivity, improve the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and contribute to the economic and social development of Luuq and the wider region.
Speaking during the event, the Director General of the Jubaland Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, Said Abdullahi Macalim, emphasized that the rehabilitated airport will play a vital role in facilitating transportation, supporting humanitarian operations, and accelerating local development efforts.
District officials and community representatives praised the successful completion of the project, highlighting the strategic importance of Luuq Airport for residents and its contribution to strengthening regional connectivity and economic opportunities.
The reopening of the airport marks a significant milestone in Jubaland’s efforts to modernize transport infrastructure and improve access to essential services for communities across the region.
