Puntland Traditional Leaders Insist on Election Schedule, Call for Urgent Action from President

28 traditional leaders from Puntland, who have been holding a meeting in Garowe city for the last few days, have issued a statement declaring that the election cannot be delayed from its scheduled date of January 8, 2024.

The traditional leaders stated that the Puntland parliament should be selected in the same clan-based manner as it has been previously, pointing out that there is not enough time left in President Deni’s term to conduct a one-person-one-vote election.

The traditional leaders also called on the President of Puntland to urgently release the annex to the election, and to appoint the committee responsible for approving the parliament and resolving disputes.

This statement from the Puntland traditional leaders comes at a time when the Council of Ministers is expected to approve the new election schedule for Puntland tomorrow, which was recently announced by the Puntland election commission.

It is unclear whether President Deni will agree with the statement issued by the traditional leaders. However, there is an existing conflict between him and King Burhan Boqor Muse, who chaired the meeting of the traditional leaders in Garowe.
