Somali government forces have apprehended Mahad Agadub, the Al Shabab head of Zakawat for several villages in the Galgadud region, during an anti-Al Shabab operation conducted yesterday.

According to a report by Somali National Television, Agadub was nabbed at noon following the operation carried out by government forces in the town of Towfiq, located 15 kilometres north of the Gal’ad district.

State-owned media sources added that during the operation, al-Shabab militants attacked the advancing army, which led Agadub to attempt to escape. However, after running approximately 3 kilometres, he suffered a heart attack and died of a bullet that hit him.

Security officials have confirmed that the Somali army is currently holding four other members of al Shabab, who will be brought to justice for their involvement with the militant group. The killing of Mahad Agadub marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to combat al-Shabab and restore regional security.

Last week, at least 44 al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in a security operation in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, the country’s Information Ministry said.

The operation was conducted on Friday by the national intelligence and security agency backed by Somalia’s international partners on the outskirts of Kurtowarey, a small town located 208 kilometres (229 miles) southwest of the nation’s capital Mogadishu
