Somali National Forces’ 60th Division liberated Gofgadud Burey with no resistance from Al Shabab militants who had captured the district last week.
Residents said that the security forces were conducting house-to-house operations to ensure security in the district and clear the mines that the group had planted on the main roads.
The group has been under intense pressure to take over the Gofgadud Burey district, about 30 kilometres from Baidoa, the interim administrative capital of Somalia’s South West regional state.
Security officials did not comment on retaking the district but promised to step up operations against al Shabab in South West state.
