Somali government forces, backed by local pro-government militia groups and international partners, have killed at least 100 al Shabab militants in new operations in Galgadud and Lower Shabelle regions over the last two days.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information, government forces and local clan forces killed 50 militants in El Gorof village in Somalia’s central region of Galgadud. In contrast, Somali intelligence agents working with international partners killed 47 others in Basra district in the Lower Shabelle region.
Ministry added that the intelligence agency targeted the militants at a place they were regrouping in preparation for an attack against the government forces in the Lower Shabelle region.
The operations, which killed score militants, came a day after military forces captured Wabho, a strategic town in the central Galgaduud region that the al-Shabaab terrorist group had controlled for more than 15 years.
In the last six months, Somali government forces backed by local clan militia forces and international partners killed over a thousand al Shabab militants in Hiiraan, Galgagud, Middle Shabelle, and Lower Shabelle regions.
Somalia has been plagued by insecurity for years, with al-Shabaab being one of the main threats in the Horn of Africa country.
