Somalia’s Minister of Finance, Dr. Elmi Mohamed Nor, chaired a meeting on Tuesday to disrupt Al Shabaab’s funding capabilities.

The meeting was attended by the heads of Somalia’s top financial institutions, including national banks and remittance companies, as well as senior government officials, including the director of the intelligence agency, the Attorney General, and the Governor of the Central Bank.

The meeting comes two days after the Somali government blocked al-Shabaab’s financial accounts through remittance companies and national banks.

Deputy Minister of Information, Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Addala, reiterated that citizens cooperating with al-Shabab would be held criminally liable and have their assets seized.

On Sunday, Somalia’s government announced that it blocked a handful of Al-Shabaab bank accounts.

The US government issued fresh sanctions against al-Shabaab’s financial facilitators last month.
