President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud emphasized the importance of international assistance for development plans.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission Josep Borrell welcomed President Mohamud’s initiatives and underscored Somalia’s importance to regional stability.

“I welcomed Somali efforts in security and defence, including the potential of further enhancing cooperation with the European Union Naval Force. I acknowledged the new leadership’s efforts to advance state-building in cooperation with federal member states and further promote economic reform efforts. Somalia stabilization remains crucial for regional security,” Josep Borrell said.

The government has asked the European Union to contribute generously to preventing environmental degradation, illegal weapons, and trawling by re-accelerating the construction of the Somali Navy so the government can control the maritime borders.
