The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has warned that Russia could cut off gas supplies to European countries in the winter.
Fatih Birol said he did not believe it was possible for Russia to cut off all European gas supplies, but that Europe needed to work on urgent plans to eliminate Russian gas.
In recent weeks, several European countries have said they have received far less gas from Russia than ever before.
Russian officials have denied the allegations in a statement issued Friday stating “Similar, baseless allegations concerning Russia’s intelligence have been made more than once.
Prior to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Europe used to import about 40% of its natural gas from Russia, but that number has now dropped to about 20%.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Fatih Birol, said he believed Russia’s recent cuts to European gas exports were “strategic”. The decline has made it difficult for European countries to fill their gas reserves and it also shows the need for Russian gas.
