Somalia’s lawmakers will hold a joint session on Wednesday today to elect the organizing committee for the presidential election, which is expected to be held before May 15.

The committee will consist of MPs from both lower and upper houses of the parliament. A note sent to lawmakers says that the session will occur at Villa Hargeisa in the capital.

At least nine people were injured after the al-Qaeda-linked armed group al Shabaab fired several rounds of mortar shells at Villa Hargeisa, where the newly elected MPs were holding a joint session on April 18.

On Tuesday, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur Madobe, presided over a security meeting attended by the army commanders ahead of tomorrow’s joint session.

During the meeting, the speaker warned the army commanders not to be involved in politics and to follow his orders regarding elections security until the country’s president is elected.
