The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is expected to have a new leader in the coming days following strained relations between the Somali government and the former head of mission Amb. Fransisco Madeira.

Diplomatic sources has confirmed that it was “unrealistic” for Francisco Madeira to return to Somalia after the Somali prime minister’s decision to expel him.

Sources say Mr Madeira has been pressured to step down so that it does not look like he has been fired.

On Thursday last week, the Chairperson of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, made it clear that he had full confidence in “Mr Madeira.

Faki Mahamat has backed Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo’s decision to oppose the expulsion of the African Union envoy.

However, Mr Fransisco Madeira left the Somali capital, Mogadishu almost two weeks ago before the announcement of the non-grata persona.
