The President of the Jubbaland State of Somalia, Ahmed Mohamed Islam, has today met with EU Ambassadors to Somalia to discuss security issues in Somalia and the ATMIS plan to replace the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

The Jubbaland state president said that security in Somalia is still deteriorating and there is no proper coordination to work on security in the country.

The Jubbaland President said that the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) had done a good job in the beginning which liberated many parts of the country and achieved significant results but in recent years it became ineffective and not working as intended as a result of the issues of troop-contributing countries in Somalia as well as donors.

Jubbaland state President Ahmed Mohamed Islam has instructed the Federal Government of Somalia to hold AMISOM forces accountable for security matters in Somalia and fastrack and intensify the preparation of a nationwide contingent to take over security from AMISOM in the future.

The tough talking Jubbaland President said that countries with troops in Somalia are part of the slowdown in AMISOM operations by interfering in Somalia’s internal politics and losing the mission of their troops in the country.

On the other hand, the Jubbaland State President said that the transition plan for the security of the country is a good one but it needs commitment and serious implementation.

The President of Jubaland state also stated that the fight against Al-Shabaab terror network could be won through the coordination of the Somali security forces and the launch of a nationwide joint operation to prevent EU and aid interventions.

The President noted that there is a great need for real accountability for security assistance to be effective and achievable.
