The commander of the Tigray forces who recently took control of Mekelle, General Tsadkan Gebretensae, has called for a ceasefire and a political solution to the conflict in the region.
He told news agencies that the Ethiopian government had failed to win the war and that it was time for the parties to enter into negotiations for a full ceasefire.
“I want to stress for the need to reach a political solution to the problem in the region. I would like the international community to understand the situation, ”Said General Tsadkan Gebretensae.
“If no other solution is found, the next thing we will do is confront the issue with military force,” He added.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Monday addressed parliament that Ethiopia’s Tigray region war is a difficult battle, but this has been weakened by TPLF.
He pointed out that Mekelle’s departure was planned for a month and involved a lot of consultation.
The TPLF has previously rejected a side-by-side ceasefire announced by the Addis Ababa government after withdrawing its troops from Mekelle.
Jananka accused the Abiy government of refusing to deliver aid to Mekelle and other parts of Tigray, an allegation denied by Addis Ababa.
