UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on the United States to lift sanctions on Iran and return to the 2015 nuclear deal.
“I urge the United States to lift or lift its sanctions,” Guterres said in a statement to the UN Security Council on Wednesday.
Guterres said he was pleased with recent diplomatic efforts by the two sides to revive the nuclear deal, which was on the verge of collapse after former US President Donald Trump pulled out of the deal in May 2018 and imposed sanctions on Iran.
In response, Tehran resumed its nuclear development activities, violating the agreement in July 2019 and exceeding its chemical development limits and storage standards.
