The Jubbaland Ministry of Livestock and Animal Husbandry has launched a campaign to treat up to 3,000 camels, sheep and goats in the northern suburbs of Kismayo.
Livestock treatment areas include Goobweyn, Yoontooy, Qaam Qaam and others areas inhabited by agro-pastoralists.
Animals are being treated for a variety of ailments including gangrene.
Ali Bashir, a pastoralist, said his livestock which were suffering from various diseases, were treated by the Jubbaland veterinary staff at the Jubbaland Ministry of Livestock.
Ali, a pastoralist in Seefdheere, north of Kismayo, said he had his camels and goats treated for the diseases.
The Jubbaland Ministry of Livestock was assisted by AVSI with veterinary treatment.
Osman Mohamed Hassan, the director of the veterinary department of the Jubbaland Ministry of Livestock who spoke to Radio Kismayo said the timing of the veterinary treatment was critical and the areas where the ministry has implemented the veterinary treatment was worst affected.
He added that the intervention was as a result of complaints from the pastoralists in areas north of Kismayo.
The director of the veterinary department at the ministry of veterinary said the livestock have been treated for the past three days and their health improved tremendously following the intervention.
The veterinary treatment being implemented by the Ministry of Livestock will last for 14 days to cater for more ailing livestock and rid of the diseases from Kismayo and its environs.
