The Ethiopian government has confirmed that its troops shot dead a United Nations convoy in the north of the country as troops battled Tigrean forces.

A spokesman for the Ethiopian government has accused UN staff of entering an unauthorized area which was off-limits.

He accused them of going directly through two checkpoints before being arrested.

The United Nations has not yet commented on the incident.

The group was reportedly trying to reach a camp for Eritrean refugees.

There are fears that some are trapped in the fighting between Ethiopian federal government forces and the TPLF fighters.

There are reports that refugees have been forced to board trucks and return to Eritrea.
