The Ministry of Livestock, Forestry and Range of Jubbaland state of Somalia has launched a public awareness campaign on the proper handling and slaughter of animals intended for Eid sacrifices, emphasizing safety, hygiene, and animal health standards.
The Director General of the ministry, Abdullahi Ali Farah, delivered the message during a press briefing held at his office, where he outlined the government’s efforts to educate the public on correct procedures associated with the annual practice of Udhiya (Eid animal sacrifice).
He stated that the ministry is committed to safeguarding both animal welfare and public health, stressing the importance of adhering to proper slaughtering methods and conducting health inspections on livestock before they are sacrificed.
“The wellbeing of our livestock and the health of our communities are closely linked,” he said. “It is essential that animals are examined and confirmed healthy before slaughter, and that proper procedures are followed at all stages.”
The Director General also urged the public to avoid slaughtering animals that are sick or whose health condition has not been verified, warning that such practices could pose risks to human health and compromise environmental cleanliness.
He added that maintaining hygiene during and after slaughter is crucial to preventing the spread of disease, particularly during large-scale celebrations when many families participate in animal sacrifice.
The ministry’s awareness campaign comes as part of broader efforts to ensure that Eid practices are carried out responsibly, in line with public health guidelines and environmental standards, while preserving the religious significance of the tradition.
