The Somali Future Council has strongly condemned an order issued by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to block a flight carrying members of both Houses of the Federal Parliament who were traveling to Puntland to participate in regional elections scheduled for March 1, 2026.
In its statement, the Council said the President’s action carries “serious legal, constitutional, and political consequences,” noting that lawmakers are constitutionally guaranteed immunity and freedom of movement. Preventing their travel, the Council argued, is a clear violation of the provisional constitution and an unlawful interference in the affairs of a legally mandated legislative institution.
The Council also criticized the use of the Somali Civil Aviation Authority for what it described as political purposes. It warned that employing a national aviation body to obstruct political actors undermines institutional neutrality. Such actions, the statement noted, threaten the safety, trust, and international credibility associated with the management of Somali airspace, potentially damaging the reputation of the country’s aviation sector.
According to the Council, this decision risks deepening political tensions at a time when Somalia is navigating a sensitive transition that requires stability, consultation, and cooperation among leaders. It stressed that the country cannot afford actions that escalate disputes or undermine ongoing reconciliation and political dialogue.
Citing principles of separation of powers and the rule of law, the Council called on President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to immediately reverse the directive blocking the MPs’ travel and to refrain from measures that erode public trust in state institutions.
The statement concluded by emphasizing that Somalia, facing significant security, economic, and humanitarian challenges, needs leadership that demonstrates responsibility, political maturity, and respect for the federal system.
