
In a significant step toward strengthening the blue economy, the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy of the Jubbaland State Government, in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), has handed over modern fishing boats and gear to local fishing cooperatives in Jubbaland state.
The handover ceremony, held in the coastal city of Kismayo, brought together officials from the Jubbaland government, representatives from WFP, members of fishing cooperatives, and other stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Jubbaland Fishermen’s Cooperative expressed gratitude for the support, noting that the equipment will play a vital role in increasing fish production and improving the livelihoods of coastal communities. He thanked both the Ministry and WFP for their continued efforts to empower local fishermen.
A WFP representative highlighted that the initiative is part of a broader project aimed at developing the blue economy and equipping local fishermen with modern tools to enhance their productivity and sustainability.
Director General of the Jubbaland Ministry of Fisheries, Mahmoud Abdi Ahmed, reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to advancing infrastructure and skills within the fishing sector.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Fisheries, Mohamed Omar Bunu, emphasized that the initiative aligns with the government’s long-term strategy to grow the blue economy and protect marine resources.
