Egypt, Saudi Arabia affirm support for security, stability of Somalia

Egypt’s Presidetial Spokesman posted a joint statement on the official social media pages, following the conclusion of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister (PM) Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to Egypt.

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Cairo International Airport, where the Crown Prince arrived as a cherished guest in his second home, Egypt. The president accompanied the Crown Prince to the Ittihadiya Palace, where official reception ceremonies were held.

On international matters, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continuing coordination and intensifying efforts aimed at preserving international peace and security. They exchanged views on issues of mutual interest at both the regional and international levels and expressed their determination to strengthen cooperation and joint coordination.

Regarding Somalia, both sides praised the reforms and the restoration of security and stability achieved under the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in many Somali regions. They agreed on the importance of international support to Somalia in its efforts to eliminate terrorism.

Both sides welcomed the UN Security Council’s decision to lift the arms embargo on Somalia and the decision of international creditors to grant Somalia debt relief. They affirmed the Arab League’s decision on January 17, 2024, regarding support for the security, stability, unity, and sovereignty of Somalia. Both sides emphasized the importance of adhering to the principles of good neighborliness, wisdom, and avoiding tensions and conflicts in the region.

Saudi Arabia commended Egypt’s efforts to support stability and preserve the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia, and praised Egypt’s offer to participate in the new peacekeeping mission in Somalia, contributing to the restoration of security and peace and fulfilling the aspirations of the Somali people.

Regarding Yemen, both sides reiterated their full support for the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen and emphasized the importance of comprehensive support for UN and regional efforts to achieve a political solution to the Yemeni crisis, ensuring the unity and stability of Yemen. Egypt praised the Kingdom’s efforts and numerous initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue and consensus among Yemeni parties and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid to all areas of Yemen.

Saudi Arabia, in turn, praised Egypt’s role in de-escalating tensions in the region and supporting comprehensive settlement efforts for the Yemeni crisis that meet the aspirations of the Yemeni people. Both sides stressed the importance of the Houthis engaging positively with efforts to end the Yemeni crisis and taking seriously the peace initiatives and efforts.

Both countries underlined the importance of maintaining the security and stability of the Red Sea region, which is vital for global trade and the world economy. They emphasized the need to avoid any risks or threats that could affect regional and international peace and security, as well as global trade.

On Libya, both sides expressed their support for a Libyan-Libyan solution and the UN-backed roadmap, as well as the efforts of UN envoys to reach a political solution that leads to holding simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections. They also affirmed the importance of unifying state institutions, including the Libyan army, and ensuring the withdrawal of all foreign forces, militias, and mercenaries from Libya to meet the aspirations of the Libyan people.
